What about the conservatives who still want to bin AI-generated assessments?
There have been several attempts of using machine algorithms to identify whether a particular text is AI-generated – a kind of “anti-ChatGPT detector” so to say. ChatGPT itself has been queried whether a piece of writing is original or AI-generated.In the FAQ section of its Guide for Teachers, OpenAI clearly sets this confusion at rest. It warns no AI tool is reliable enough to distinguish if the content is AI-generated, and responses by ChatGPT to such queries are mostly random and have no logical basis.
The company has elaborated that when they tried to train an AI-generated-content-detecting tool, it even labelled excerpts from Shakespeare and the US Declaration of Independence as AI-generated.“While some (including OpenAI) have released tools that purport to detect AI-generated content, none of these have proven to reliably distinguish between AI-generated and human-generated content”, the FAQ section clarified.
And here’s the most devastating blow to purists who are still trying to find a tech solution: “Even if these tools could accurately identify AI-generated content (which they cannot yet), students can make small edits to evade detection.”
