According to Alex Zekoff, CEO and co-founder of Thoughtful AI, a startup specialising in AI agents for healthcare, these agents herald “a new era of technology.” But what exactly is an AI agent, and how does it differ from traditional AI chatbots?

A virtual assistant, for instance, could organize and reserve a detailed, personalized travel schedule, and also manage logistics across various travel platforms. Similarly, an engineer might explain the features ofa new software in simple terms – based on which a programming agent could execute the coding, testing, refining, and deployingactivities for the tool.

Understanding AI Agents

An AI agent is defined by its ability to independently make decisions to achieve goals set by humans, much like a human employee. This sets it apart from AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT, which primarily respond to user inputs without the capability to autonomously navigate tasks. For instance, in a call centre environment, an AI agent could determine which questions to ask and decide on the appropriate information and next steps for each customer. This level of autonomy allows AI agents to enhance operational efficiency and improve customer service.

Zekoff emphasises that “human-capable AI agents are creating a future where workplaces are enhanced.” He notes that these technologies can assist in anticipating staffing needs and managing various tasks, thereby streamlining operations and freeing human employees to focus on more complex issues.

The Impact on Employment

A 2020 estimate from the World Economic Forum projected that AI could displace 85 million jobs by 2025 while simultaneously creating 97 million new roles. However, these estimates were made prior to the widespread adoption of AI tools like ChatGPT, which surpassed 180 million monthly users in 2024.

A recent survey conducted by Washington State University revealed that nearly half of U.S. workers are concerned about being left behind as AI technology continues to evolve. Despite these fears, many businesses are eager to adopt AI solutions. A Capgemini survey indicated that over 80% of business leaders plan to use AI agents for tasks such as data analysis, code creation, and email writing within the next one to three years.

The potential of AI agents is illustrated through testimonials from industry leaders. Cara Perry, vice president of revenue cycle at Signature Dental Partners, described an AI agent as “like training a perfect employee that works 24 hours a day, exactly how you trained it.” This capability to operate continuously and consistently can significantly enhance productivity, especially in sectors requiring round-the-clock service.

Challenges and Ethical Considerations

While the benefits of AI agents are clear, Zekoff warns that significant challenges remain. One of the most pressing issues is the mitigation of human biases that can influence AI systems. In sensitive sectors like healthcare and government, these biases could impact the fairness and effectiveness of AI agents. The European Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestager, echoed these concerns in 2023, stating that AI risks could lead to individuals “not being seen as who they are” and facing automated bias.

Moreover, AI technology has been shown to produce inaccurate answers and images, raising questions about reliability. Legal scrutiny is also mounting, particularly concerning allegations of copyright violations, with training costs for AI models exceeding $100 million.

AI agents represent a transformative force in the workplace, offering the potential to enhance efficiency and reshape job roles. However, as businesses embrace this technology, they must also navigate the complexities of bias, accuracy, and ethical considerations. The balance between leveraging AI for productivity and ensuring fair treatment of employees will be crucial as we move into this new era of technology. As we stand on the brink of widespread AI adoption, the future of work may very well depend on how effectively we can integrate these intelligent agents into our existing frameworks while addressing the challenges they present.
