There is an urgent need for businesses to embrace green technologies to combat climate change effectively. The current environmental challenges require swift action and a collective effort from both public and private sectors. Green technologies offer innovative solutions that can significantly reduce carbon emissions, preserve natural resources, and foster sustainable development.

While the benefits of green technologies are evident, there are still various barriers that hinder their widespread adoption. These barriers include high upfront costs, lack of awareness and understanding, regulatory complexities, and limited access to funding. Overcoming these challenges requires a multi-faceted approach involving governments, businesses, and other stakeholders to provide the necessary support and create an enabling environment.

Accelerating Green Technology Adoption: Strategies for Success

To fast-track the adoption of green technologies, businesses need to implement effective strategies that drive change at various levels. The report highlights three key strategies for success:

  • Creating Incentives and Policies: Governments play a vital role in promoting green technology adoption by implementing supportive policies and offering incentives. These can include tax credits, grants, and subsidies to incentivize businesses to invest in green technologies and make the transition towards sustainability more financially viable.

BCG writes: “the green technologies now being scaled up around the world—including renewable energy generated by solar and wind, heat optimization and recovery, electrical efficiency, operations optimization, and natural carbon sequestration—have the potential to reduce only about 23 gigatons of (carbon dioxide) emissions per year—45% of the 51 gigatons of CO2e currently being released into the atmosphere every year. To reach net zero goals, countries must eliminate or offset the remaining 28 gigatons of CO2e per year.”

To achieve the net-zero goals set out in the Paris Agreement, the global community must adopt a range of new green technologies. These technologies include low-carbon hydrogen, biofuels, and carbon capture, utilisation, and storage. However, unlike previous green technologies like solar photovoltaic and onshore wind, these new technologies must scale at an accelerated pace, two to four times faster. In order to expedite their market entry, stakeholder ecosystems play a crucial role.

Stakeholder ecosystems bring together various key players, including manufacturers, suppliers, financiers, governmental bodies, and educators, each contributing their unique and essential capabilities to bring a new technology to market. An orchestrator can facilitate the design of such ecosystems, ensuring a shared commitment to a common goal and securing the necessary investments for their success.
