Pravin Cumar
Manager – Analytics , L & T Financial Services – PGPBA Class of 2017, Bangalore
The field of business analytics being as vast and as growing as it is, it is quintessential that you begin off with the right institute and I found Praxis living up to its reputation in that. Although there were some initial hiccups being the first batch in Bangalore; the management, the faculty and the students together were able to sail through smoothly and create a great learning experience. The course content is both relevant to market and in-depth. It does not concentrate only on the Statistics and Machine Learning but also on its application to business. The Statistics, SQL and data mining faculties leave a mark on how the content is delivered and making sure that the students understand it well.
So..If you are up for the “grind”, it can be one of the best places you can find…

Overview
Data Science: Today and Tomorrow – message from the Director
What is Data Science? Data driven decisions based on the principles of management science and operations research have always been popular in large, professionally managed corporates but have become far more pervasive with the emergence of data science and business analytics. Data science grew out an exponential growth in the availability of data that is automatically generated through digital transactions like phone calls, card swipes, electronic fund transfers, e-Commerce, social media and finally, from smart sensors that are a part of the “Internet of Things”. The ancient science of statistics has found a new life and relevance because of the availability of software tools and techniques that allow oceans of data to be churned at ease to yield the valuable butter of managerial insight that allows us to address real life situations faced by managers in areas like retail, telecom, banking, finance, insurance and operations. This is the genesis of the Business Analytics & Data Science program at Praxis Business School.
Global Shortage of Analytics Talent: According to research conducted by McKinsey Global Institute – “by 2018 the united states will experience a shortage of 190,000 skilled data scientists, and 1.5 million managers and analysts capable of reaping actionable insights from the big data deluge. With an estimated 40,000 exabytes of data being collected by 2020 — up from 2700 exabytes in 2012 — the implications of this shortage become apparent.” Praxis has got knowledge support from ICICI Bank and PricewaterhouseCoopers, two well respected names from the corporate sector, to create a unique 9 month full-time program in Business Analytics & data Science that equips students with the knowledge, skills and confidence that meet and exceed what corporates expect from the practitioners of this discipline.
Top-5 Analytics Program in the country: With its long experience in business education, Praxis understands that students need both the time to understand the complex theory and practice of Business Analytics and the guidance from knowledgeable faculty who are available on campus for mentoring. This is why Praxis has chosen a full-time program to teach Analytics – and perhaps why our program has been recognized as being one of the top Analytics programs in India*. As a further endorsement of the quality of our program and faculty, Praxis has been selected by the Andhra Pradesh government as a model program for the International Institute of Digital Technologies, Tirupati and by Savitribai Phule Pune University.
The Praxis Placement Program: Another feature of the program that makes it unique is the well-structured campus placement program that ensures interview opportunities with the most significant companies in the analytics area. Our students have won for themselves excellent campus placements and have performed with distinction, ensuring ‘repeat purchase’ by the industry. Encouraged by the student and industry response, Praxis has launched a second, Spring Batch (beginning January), in addition to the traditional Fall Batch (beginning July), from 2016. I invite students to join this unique and popular program and enhance their career prospects by leveraging job opportunities in the exciting areas of Data Science and Business Analytics.

Methodology
Business Analytics & Data Science lie at the intersection of three key disciplines, namely Statistics & Machine Learning, Programming and the targeted Business Domain and the 9 month program at Praxis is designed to address all three in significant depth.
The backbone of analytics is the theory of statistics in general and machine learning in particular and these two key areas are offered as two different subjects. Both these subjects have ‘lab’ sessions where the students use Python to apply the theory. In parallel, students are also taught SAS and R for the implementation of key concepts from statistics and machine learning.
Students are introduced to the principles of Big Data using Hadoop/ Spark and Python. Students learn how to migrate and port machine learning applications from their laptops to the Amazon AWS platform so as to understand how to leverage the power of large clusters.
Students are exposed to a set of near real world projects obtained from a variety of sources. Faculty use data available from Kaggle competitions to create assignments and student solutions are benchmarked against global leaderboards.
Case studies borrowed from the Business Management program of Praxis give students a basic grounding in the principles of horizontal domains like finance and marketing and in vertical areas like retail and telecom so that they can relate to the “business end” of business analytics.
Finally, a comprehensive, practice-based course on business communication enhances the story-boarding skills of the students and prepares them to ‘tell the story’ of the business problem and the consequent analytics solution – a skill all data scientists need.
